Over the last five years women in Nicaragua have made decisive progress to overcome the historic condition of disadvantage in a culture dominated by machismo. Both socially and economically, women have made steady progress towards more equal treatment. Now women are making marked progress politically too under the Sandinista government of President Daniel Ortega and the leadership of First Lady Rosario Murillo.
